Maris pushes Katia to follow him to places that maybe she wouldn't have done had a he not pushed her. The acid lake story is nice because it's like they're really using their wits to try all kinds of things and it's also just this fun tension between them too. It's obviously very dangerous but it's it's almost comical I think to explore this rift between them.
