How Far Was the Church Representing the Essential Values of Christianity?
The values of Christianity are embedded in the figure of Christ above all and in the gospels. But simultaneously, it's incredibly unstable because one of the things that it introduces into society is the idea that radical change can actually be a positive. And over the course of the 11th and 12th centuries, agents of this radically reforming papacy committed to what it calls rephamatio, a reshaping of the world. This form of revolution continues to reverberate throughout subsequent European and then Western history. In the Reformation, you get pretty much everything that you've got in the 11th century. You get kings being humbled. You get people ideologically committed to concepts of holy war.
