The Fall of the Soviet Union

When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, it immediately became an issue of what was going to happen with NATO. The European leaders at the time said they wanted to build Gorbachev's phrase, the new European home. People understood that there was a serious risk that once the Soviet Union ceased to exist, Russia and Ukraine would be at the risk of war.
