The Transformative Impact of the Railroad in the 1860s
Before the Civil War most of what we recognized to be the kind of modern structures of American political, technological and even perhaps economic life did not operate the way they do currently. So my chapter in Civil War opens with the Colorado Gold Rush when tens of thousands of overland migrants are heading to the Rocky Mountains. And so I write a drive the heart of overland travel before the Civil War and linking himself into that narrative.
