What's the Story of Afghanistan and the Soviet Union?
Afghanistan's King Amanola was one of the very first international leaders to recognize the October Revolution. He corresponds almost immediately with Lenin, for example, recognizing this new government. So there is this much longer history of Afghan Soviet relationships and the Soviet Union throughout the 1950s and 1960s. The Soviets had a pretty ambivalent perspective on kind of the promises of socialism within Afghanistan.
