After the baking hot temperatures of august 19 14, the thermometers dropped as winter approached. Lieutenant arthur pellam burne of the gordon highlanders described the mud in a letter home. It is so sticky that my men to arrive in the trenches with bere feet. And sods law, what do they one of the worst winters of the century. The british soldier was not equipped for winter weather. Not equipped for living in a flooded trench. They didn't have trench waders. Their boots would fall apart. You immerse them constantly in water and mud. They're puttees. They don't work.
