Hansel and Gretel thought their father was nearby with a wooden axe. The sound wasn't coming from the axe though, it was a branch he had tied to a withered tree. Hansel took his sister by the hand and they followed the small shimmering stones on the ground. They walked through the night and at daybreak, they made it back home.
