Robert Oppenheimer was driven to succeed. He was anti-fascist in his political leanings. This was his major motivation for building this gadget. Only one physicist quit Los Alamos in the spring of 1945,. Joseph Rotblatt, but the others remained and worked hard. On July 16th, 1945, they exploded the first atomic bomb at the Trinity's site.
