Alcohol Dependency and Custom by Second Nature
Alcoholism was used as a term in the 17th century to describe people who we would otherwise describe as probably addicts or dependents. The adaption of the language of addicts itself to start to describe alcohol dependency as a disease takes place at the end of the 18th century into the 19th century. This is also when alcohol as the property of these beverages as the kind of the chemical operative agent has also been identified and separated from the beverage itself. In that respect the scientific identification of alcohol as a chemical property and the identification of a dependency may happen at the same time.
