The Importance of Apprenticeship
In the middle ages and in the Renaissance, you had artists, makers, artisans, crafts people who typically at the age of 12 would go work for a master. You didn't get paid, but you got room and board and you got an experience. This was the way in western society that a person became a professional. The apprenticeship season lasted seven to eight years. Then the second part, you became a journeyman. For two to three years, you would typically leave your town or city. And then you would submit some piece of work which was called a masterpiece.
