Sally Kohn: The most eye-opening lesson that came from your interactions with SEALs was the idea of optimism. One kind of emotional management technique you consistently hear from SEALs and other special operations people is a short-term focus, she says. "When things feel personal, I suck. I'm terrible at this," one SEAL told her. When things feel persistent, it's always going to be awful, another said. That shift in mindset really helps produce optimism and optimism and produces grit."
