Philip and celie armin are on the edge of starvation. They have been held off by a fellow from upe's tribe, but he is coming to get them. Celie has told olaf that she will marry him if they ever get out of this fix. The two men find themselves surrounded by half a hundred men in the woods. A bullet spattered against the log wall jingled inside their cabin. Philip turned for a moment toward celie who put her arms about his shoulders. She then slipped away back to her father.
