The FBI is confident that Terrell was in Alaska when the kids disappeared, but they still consider the possibility that he may have hired someone to grab his son. They're thinking maybe Terrell wanted to get Lemone before he returned to California with Levet. But Terrell and Levet weren't involved in any sort of custody battle. And if he just wanted his son, why is he also taking crevice? It's the same thing that made Gregory's involvement nonsensical.
