In 1916, when Woodrow Wilson was campaigning for reelection and he wanted the first Democrat to be reelected since the Civil War, he won it by I think like 3000 votes in California. And his campaign was he kept us out of war, right? A few months later, we're part of the Great War, and fighting the draft became a felony. Eugene V. Debs, who had been the socialist candidate, was imprisoned. It took president Harding to commute or pardon his sentence to get him out of jail. Point being, being against the Great War went from being a winning campaign strategy to being a felony in the matter of months.
