Cathedrals are unlike monasteries. The cathedrals were very political. They were expressions of civic pride, national pride. But at the same time, what i found facinating about them was they did not reflect that in style. The style was always led by france. It's a reflection of the wealth of anglo saxon, england, but coopted into a very different architectural and religious political tradition. Yes, it was very political. In the same way that the capician kings in France rebuilt all their cathedrals in the high gothic style as a way of showing that they were the top part of france.
