Snapshot Isolation in SQL Server
The killer part of this is because you're going all the way up to the root. Any time you go look at a new root node, you're always looking at a consistent snapshot and that's such an elegant solution. There's no filtering. You just point to the main root node and then you have access to all the the leafs from there on down.
