The Evolution of Assistance Dogs
Vets become increasingly professionalised during the 19th century, but they treat overwhelmingly livestock and horses. Most people wouldn't be able to access a vet to treat their dog in the 19th Century. A lot of dog manuals will suggest that you could perform your own surgery on dogs. The general advice is you just need to take the plunge and be brave and your dog won't mind - which I'm not sure that all the kitchen table.
