The Middle of the Earth

The great United States exploring expedition set sail under the command of Lieutenant Charles Wilkes. For over four years the ships surveyed the South Pacific. They found nearly 300 islands and 1500 miles of coastal Antarctica establishing that it was a continent. But they did not find a hole in the pole that led to the middle of the planet. The US was now established as a country that could make world-class scientific contributions.
