The Meta Representation of Language
Some would say that the meta representational capacity that we have is not fundamental, but language is. Some very clever dogs can be trained hundreds of different complex commands and they're always modifying their behavior to our commands. But humans seem to do something special with language and they try to change each other's mental states. When I talk to my child, I don't say sit. Sometimes I say sit, but I will show them things and explain things to them. I try to change their mental states, but for them to understand that's what I'm doing with language, they have to understand that I and they are attending to the same thing. So they have to have a theory of mind
