What Do Abbots and Abbesse Do?

Abbots and abbesses have the authority to commission histories, either from members of their own communities or by bringing in people from external places. So is this, this influence, this authority those resources that are really interesting for me? It's a much bigger understanding of what writing history actually is and does than simply thinking of perhaps in the modern sense of a historian who sits down with a bunch of books.
