The Case of William Morgan
The story goes that William Morgan was abducted and taken to the Niagara River. He disappeared right after he wrote this book, which whipped up a frenzy of anti-Masonic sentiment. In New York state, the number of lodges went from 480 in 1825 to 75 in 1835.
