The speaker of the House is unique among congressional leaders in that the office is provided for in the Constitution, especially in modern times. The other core responsibility of the speaker is to act as the leader of the majority party in the House of Representatives. That's why this situation both procedurally and then also by extension politically are so different than say the question over who was going to be the Democratic leader in the House or if there was a kind of challenge to Mitch McConnell to be the Republican leader in the Senate.
