NATO in Europe

NATO expanded eastward ahead of the EU and European defense and security politics have in the post-war period always been subordinated to the US led military alliance. Mike Davis once quipped that social spending in Europe was subsidized by the American nuclear umbrella but France for years has called on Europe to develop what they call strategic sovereignty. Anton: I don't think you have to accept that social spending and defense spending are basically in this really strict trade-off.
