The Battle of Creta
During a six-month occupation of Crete, Churchill demanded that the island be turned into a fortress but this doesn't occur. This was in part due to muddled thinking at the Hyath Thechelons and it is an example of imperial overstretch. There are so many points that need to be reinforced from Persia all the way to Greece that the British now occupy or control that it becomes possible to see Cretas and irrelevance as low down the list of priorities.
