He was born in 17 25 in venice, and he was a venetian through and through. It was a culture of masking, of posturing, of making people believe what you wanted them to believe. He liked to believe that his biological father was probably the theatre manager where his father worked,. And it may even be true, but he wanted to think he was a prince in disguise. The main industry of venice, which had been a great commercial centre in the middle ages, was gambling. They had an official state casino, the ridoto, which was run by the noblemen of venice.
