The Importance of Asian Knowledge in Post-War Japan

By the 1940s, Japan's fermenters had three techniques in their arsenal. Techniques of alcohol production were important to imperial expansion because the alcohol industry was driven by the military. colonial frontiers were the source of biodiversity in Japan's national microbial culture collections. It's the reason why most of the research took place in colonies such as Taiwan and why heritage brewing cultures at the margins of Japan's empire wound up forming the basis of resources for a dynamic post-war biotechnology in Japan.
