I'd argue that this customer can save a lot of ERP investment precisely by reverting to a normal ERP side footprint. There are no off the shelf's MES systems that provide all MES capabilities for all businesses out of the box. This is because when organizations are not constrained by the limitations of MES or ERP they go where the efficiency can be captured. They pay no attention to clean event triggers or encoded state registers or even linear manufacturing steps.
