He passed the yusupov garden and was deeply absorbed in considering the building of great fountains. He had to make haste and at the same time, go some way round so as to approach the house from the other side. The staircase leading to the old woman's room was close by, just on the right of the gateway. But he could hear shouting and quarrelling, but no one noticed him,. No one met him; many windows looking into that huge quadrangular yard were open - but he did not raise his head. A dead silence. Listened long and intently, then looked about him for the last time before pulling himself together.
