Over-End Gurney - The Lender of Last Resort
In 1866 a discount house called Over-End Gurney and Co. collapsed. Historians have looked at this as the turning point in the bank's relationship with itself. The bank then had to step in to stabilise the economy, but it was never going to make these bold statements about we will be the lender of last resort nor do it build up its reserves for that purpose.
