The Importance of Balance in Europe
There still was this very strong sense that a balance of power ought to be achieved. But the preponderance of power was now shifting toward the German Empire instead of France. And so France spent much of the next decades trying to reassert itself, even as it became a republic. Many people were concerned that that would be the source of a next major conflict between France and Britain or Germany and Britain.
