The book puts a different spin on the story of Britain between the end of the Roman period and the start of the Viking era. The traditional way of understanding this period is to see it through the lens of very particular kingdoms that came out the other end in a powerful and strong position. So there's a sort of a divine mandate to the progress of English history as well that develops from it.
