I think Nietzsche was as close to a prophet as a modern philosopher's ever gotten, maybe even a full on prophet. Some of the things he prophesied came to pass, including the total disaster of the Soviet Union and Nazism. In this particular essay, he's talking to you as an individual, but he's also dissecting the modern age in a very interesting way. He no longer knows how to employ the past as a nourishing food. This is somewhat like what Alfred Krasinski called time binding. Right, exactly.
