A CFP is a fee-only financial planner, meaning they don't take commission from any products that they sell. They're much more apt to just kind of look at your broad situation and say, these are things that you need to change rather than saying, hey, I recommend this really good investment product. You're looking for someone who can kind of pick out and say, you should have taken $3,000 in capital losses this year to offset your ordinary income. It doesn't necessarily mean just because they're charging more, they know more.
