The Disincentivized Politics of Fear
The binary two-party system directly disincentivizes active participation in democracy. I think what happens when politics becomes this incredibly heightened, emotional, anger and fear-driven activity is that it engages certain types of actors and disengages other actors. People are voting because they're scared of the alternative, and it's really a politics of fear and existential threat. These are emotions that shut down reason and rationality and future thinking and make us just kind of dumb about politics.
