The Story of a Ghost Ship

The Mary Celeste was found floating off the coast of general by 800 miles in 1872. The ship had been carrying 1,700 barrels of alcohol from New York to Geneva when it went missing. It's one of those many vagaries of freight that was something that was fairly common for that kind of a load to be put on a very small ship. There were lots of ghost ships as they called them empty ships floating around in that period.
