Is the Enlightenment Really a Fundamental Atheist Movement?
The old stereotype of the enlightenment as a basically atheistic movement is misleading, but it's not completely wrong. I think that if you look at the great evangelical revivals of the 18th century, Methodism and Hyattism, these have to be seen very much as enlightenment phenomenon. And for that reason, I think it really means leading to think of the Enlightenment as a fundamentally anti-religious movement. But you do also have this phenomenon of the so-called radical enlightenment, those who are more openly challenging some of the core philosophical assumptions of the day.
