The emperor domitian was perceived to be a cruel tyrant by members of Rome's elite. He painted his home black and had slaves attend the dinner, so that diners didn't have their own slaves with them. This undermined feeling of stability for those who dined with him. And what it meant was they were able to control the experience of another person's body.
