The Value of History and Historical Examples

The social sciences have a great added value in that they can isolate variables in carefully controlled laboratory experiments. But the downside of that is that it's not real world. And what historians can do is look at how people really behaved under extreme pressure, with all of the many variables that they had to confront. When you look at the whole range of what people go through and then try and understand how they made decisions, you get a very different perspective.
