The Point of NATO Membership Is Almost Totally Symbolic
NATO membership does not require member states to go to war in mutual defense. It just requires them to take appropriate actions if another member state is attacked. The advantages to the West of putting Finland and Sweden in NATO are huge because it greatly complicates Putin's calculus.
