The Limits of Pictorial Evidence
The difficulty is all three sources have major limitations. Pictorial sources in particular are very seductive, but they may not depict reality at all. Documentary evidence often provides insights that the other two fail to provide. And sometimes secondary documentary sources have made assumptions about dressing the past that it's very hard to get out of our minds.
