Did the US Military Really Want You to Enlist in the Military?

In your memoir it's a very candid memoir and you describe how you really struggled with basic training. But were you just trying to escape from the reality of your life as it was then? Sure I think that's why a lot of people at that age enlist in the military. Well I mean other people would make the suggestion that that's exactly what you need at that time so you know then that was what my father was suggesting and that's what the military itself was even suggested.
