The Importance of Indian Affairs in American Foreign Policy
Indian affairs are one of the few areas in which most settlers or state leaders agree should be the exclusive domain of the federal government. Jay's Treaty and the Louisiana Purchase Treaty of 1803 are examples of how issues around Indian affairs come to shape American foreign policy determinations and deliberations. The process of making treaties is one of the first and only forms of essentially foreign policy power that the federal government has done both during the period of the articles and then during the constitution.
