Early bitcoin adopters included at least a few outright tax protesters, who not only opposed taxation in principle, but actively and very publicly refused to pay their own taxes. The idea that bitcoins pseudonymity could be used to hide wealth and avoid taxes was more realistic a decade ago than it appears to day. At a higher level, though, bitcoin opens up dramatic new possibilities for shrinking the footprint of the state.
