The Importance of Conscription in the War of 1914
Prussia had already moved to a system of almost universal conscription. It contributes to the militarization, not only strengthening the army, but it affects towns and where soldiers were living. The armies that seemed so large in 1870, at the hundreds of thousands, were now armies of the millions. Once armies entered into war in 1914, it was very difficult to pull back.
