Fundamental Physics

There has been a trend towards people who call themselves doing fundamental physics often being pulled away from empirical verication. This leads me to, ah, a bit of a sociological question. Have you been frustrated by some trends in fundamental theoretical physics? I think ta, there is a problem for physics as a whole, which has arisen because a no testing. The theory that was worked on 50 years ago has been tested pretty thoroughly. But if you want to continue to to op your understanding of physics, you have to develop deeper theories that can only be tested by deeper, and usually more expensive experiments.
