Gemma Purdy is a professor at the Australia Indonesia Center at Monash University in Melbourne. She wrote a book called Anti-Chinese Violence in Indonesia, 1996 to 1999. Ethnic Chinese were assumed to be part of this alleged Communist agenda. They got caught up in the Indonesian government's anti-leftist backlash. In 1998, Indonesia's cities exploded with violence against ethnic Chinese.
