The Risks of Bats and Humans

Despite folklore, there's no evidence that bats want to bite people or feed on their blood. Humans are discouraged from visiting any places where bats hibernate as a fatal fungal disease called White Nose Syndrome is thought to be carried by human contact. One estimate claims they can carry up to 72,000 viruses and yet not get sick themselves. There's still a lot for us to learn about bats and their immune systems. We need them because of the crucial role they have in the ecosystem - especially planting seeds of Ghana's precious erocho trees.
