The relationship between Richard I and the French king Philip II, sometimes also known as Philip Augustus is a subject of this week's History Extra podcast. Gabby says there has been an ongoing myth about Richard's sexuality in recent years. She argues that some 20th century historians have misconstrued quotes from 12th century chronicler Roger of Howlden to make it look like he was gay. In fact, howlden wrote his words had nothing to do with same sex affection towards other men but rather transgression for being not hospitable or virtuous.
