The History of Underwear
People in the 16th century had a choice of essentially three materials, linen, wool and silk. The layer that will go on top of an ordinary woman's smock is usually referred to as a curtle. But later on in the century, it would be a petticoat. A wealthier woman often has a p Petticoat over their smock and then a curle.
