In 1332, there was flooding in China that killed about 7 million people. That was followed by drought; pest species tend to proliferate because they're called R-strategists. The fleas that caused the Black Death would then jump to rats and spread through Europe. There's another example that actually relates to England as well: Justinian Plague may have originated in Africa.
